Focus is firmly on families at this year’s Calgary Stampede

Calgary, AB –-- The Calgary Stampede is putting “families first” in its plans for this year’s Greatest Outdoor Show on
Earth by adding 80,000 more seats for family-oriented shows and introducing many new features designed with
families in mind.
“This year’s Stampede, July 9-18, will see a 40 per cent increase in seating capacity for family entertainment,”
says Jim Laurendeau, senior manager, Calgary Stampede Programming.
“We’re adding terrific new events the whole family can enjoy. Where else can folks watch a wonderful new ice
show, an equestrian event never before held in Canada, and an astounding heavy horse display, all in one day,
all for one price?” asks Laurendeau. “We hope our guests will stay longer because they’ll be having even more
fun and all for the price of admission to Stampede Park.”
Among the new family focused features:
• A stunning new Rock ‘n Roll Ice Show for the Stampede Corral will feature some of the world’s best
figure skaters, live music and amazing production. This event has been created specifically for the
Stampede, never before seen anywhere else in the world. “It’s what you get when you mix world-class
figure skating, a modern rock concert, a camera crew and huge video screens, acrobats suspended from
the ceiling and an abundance of lights and lasers in one show,” says Laurendeau.
• Draft Horse Town is an all-new dedicated area next to the Saddledome that will showcase Belgians,
Clydesdales, Percherons and Shires, the mighty horses who helped build western Canada set among live
entertainment, horse-hitching demonstrations, weigh-ins, barn tours and plenty of raw horsepower.
• The Cowboy Up Challenge is an exciting event that showcases both horse and rider as they maneuver
through a series of obstacles demonstrating their amazing horsemanship skills and incredible speed.
• Ignite is a new show at the Bell Midway Circus when, each night at dusk, the evening will explode with
powerful drumming and a fiery high-dive, all leading up to a spectacular display of high-level fireworks
viewable from the seats at the Midway Circus.
• A new and improved location for the popular President’s Choice Superdogs show is the upper floor of the
Big Four.
• The RCMP Musical Ride returns to Stampede Park with two special performances in the Saddledome and
another presentation in front of the Grandstand during the BMO Kids Day breakfast – free to families
coming to Stampede Park before 9 a.m.
• And, of course, a visit to Stampede is never complete without that “only-once-a-year-at-the-Stampede”
eating experience so among the new food items introduced this year are Cheese-on-a-Stick and Pulled
Pork Parfaits.
All these new features are free with admission – and the Stampede has confirmed admission to The Greatest
Outdoor Show on Earth will remain the same as last year: adult admission is $14, seniors and children under 12
just $7 and children under six, free.
Finally, one of the best kept secrets for families looking for a great deal is the real cost of a ticketed event in the
Grandstand, says Laurendeau. “Since every advance ticket for the Stampede Rodeo or Evening Show includes
Park admission, the actual cost of upgrading your family’s Stampede experience is very affordable.”
This year’s Stampede Rodeo features the greatest gathering of rodeo champions, including 64 current and past
champions, competing in the world’s richest outdoor rodeo. Meanwhile, the Evening Show is actually two
world-class experiences rolled into one ticket: the heart-stopping GMC Rangeland Derby and the Grandstand
Show spectacular, this year entitled World Show.
