Pablo Barrios takes the $25,000 BC Timberframe Grand Prix aboard G&C Quick Star

Langley, BC --– An international field of competitors, led by Venezuela’s Pablo Barrios, took to the field in Langley for the $25,000 BC Timberframe Grand Prix. Barrios and his 10 year-old German bred mare, G&C Quick Star, were flawless and fast through two rounds for the win, closing out the Canadian Premier tournament at Thunderbird Show Park, which leads directly into the BC Open and the first of two World Cup stops.
Course designer, Peter Holmes, incorporated open water, a challenging triple combination and a single vertical that proved to be the jump to beat for almost half the field into Sunday’s class. Leading into the first round, Barrios was optimistic about how his horses would respond, having arrived only days earlier from the Kentucky.
“My new gelding may by spooky with the open water and gate, but I like the course for my mare,“ noted Barrios.
Thirty-one competitors answered his challenge, but only seven went clear and into the jump off. Among those eliminated in the first round were Calgary’s Emily George with a late rail, Langley native, Brian Morton and Bryna Closson from Whitefish, Montana. Barrios had faults in his first round on G&C Tropicolo, but G&C Quick Star left room to spare over each fence, posting a comfortable, yet competitive time.
Rich Fellers was clear on both his mounts, Flexible and McGuinness, along with Gary Brewster and Royal Viali, Audra Fleck-Snijders and Rainland Mel, Joelle Froese and Condor, Christopher Lowe and Jackpot and Ireland’s Jennifer Crooks on S.F. Uryadi.
Brewster led the way in the jump off, taking a rail at the final fence. Fellers and Flexible were fast, but posted four faults in the combination. Audra Fleck-Snijders and Crooks took a rail each, while Joelle Froese was unable to return for the jump off, opening the door for Barrios. With tight turns and not a single wasted stride, G&C Quick Star lay down the first clear round with a time of 38.90. Fellers and McGuinness weren’t able to challenge for the lead after a rail at fence one, but Lowe and Jackpot delivered the only other clear round at 47.74 for second.
Barrios answered the cheers from the crowd with a bow of the head as he led the way out of the ring following an energetic victory lap from Star.
“It was good.”
After two days break, Thunderbird gears up again for the British Columbia Open from June 2nd to 6th. Arriving competitors Ashlee Bond (USA) and Chris Pratt (CAN) will join Barrios, Fellers and Crooks for the $55,000 CSI2*-W Rolex FEI World Cup Grand Prix on Saturday, the first North American stop where competitors can earn points in the FEI North American League West. Thunderbird will host a second World Cup grand prix in August.
